Description

Francisci Maurolyci, Emendatio et Restitutio conicorum Apollonii Pergaei, nunc primum typis excusae, ubi primi quatuor eiusdem Apollonii libri mendis … expurgantur, novisque interdum demonstrationibus illustrantur: quintus verò, sextus(q)ue liber … denuo restituuntur. Messina, typis hæredum Petri Breæ, 1654 Messanae, Haeredum Petri Breae, 1654

Adaptation of Apollonius’ treatise on cones by Franciscus Maurolicus, who tries to reconstruct the hitherto missing chapters V-VIII of the work. “Maurolico’s two other major books on ancient mathematics – one on Appollonius’ Conics, and the other a collection of the works of Archimedes – were published only after his death. In Emendatio et restitutio conicorum Apollonii Pergaei Maurolico attempted to reconstruct books V and VI of the Conics from the brief references to them that Apollonius provided in his preface to the entire work” (DSB).

Slightly browned, title slightly stronger, with small brown stains and bookseller’s label below. Occasionally slightly waterstained; continuous backed loss in the binding below, this with brown margins and with some loss of text; some hs.
